When I was in college I was like most college students poor and hungry. I love greek yogurt but I didn’t have much time to make it our money to buy it. So I thought can I make greek yogurt but not from scratch? After…
I first got into making Greek yogurt when a friend regifted an extra yogurt maker to me. My first greek yogurt maker was like the Euro-cuisine YM-100 For what it is, it’s a pretty awesome and inexpensive yogurt maker. For making greek yogurt, however, it was pretty mediocre. It is only an incubator, so to use it to make greek yogurt only added steps and made more dirty dishes. I had to scrape the yogurt out of the tiny cups to strain the yogurt. It made perfectly fine individual servings of yogurt, but the yogurt it made was thin and runny, which was the opposite of what I wanted. Finally, it didn’t make all that much yogurt. We go through quite a bit in our house, what with the mixing it with granola, or making sauces, or dips, or adding it to everything to make life more delicious and this maker just didn’t cut it.
Since my daughter started school, and I have gone back to work, I have found I don’t have enough time to keep up with the demands for greek yogurt in our house. The biggest problem now is that I am not always home when the yogurt needs to come out or it’s done straining (this isn’t a bad thing, see my article on greek yogurt cheese). So I found myself googling around for yogurt makers to fit the bill, and boy did I find one.
The cuisinart electric yogurt maker is fantastic. You still have to prep the milk and mix in the cultures before pouring it into the
machine, but the best part is that it cools the yogurt when the timer finishes and will keep chilling it for up to 12 hours. So if you like your greek yogurt a little milder flavored, you just set it for a shorter period of time, say 6 hours, and then this thing stops incubating and starts chilling it. What this means is that while you’re making your breakfast, you just scald the milk and pour it into the machine and when you come home from work you can just pour the chilled yogurt out and strain it. By bedtime, you’ll have some pretty awesome greek yogurt!
When I looked at it I wrote it off because I didn’t know where I would store it, but since getting it, I haven’t had to store it because I can now constantly make yogurt. As soon as one batch is done, I can strain it, wash the container and start again. It’s great! The reason I inevitably bought it was that it is a cuisinart product. Everything I have ever bought from the company has been excellent. Next on the list of yogurt related happiness is a cuisinart ice cream maker so I can start making frozen greek yogurt. More on that to come.
The greeks got many things right and one of them is pairing homemade greek yogurt with meat. Obviously I am excited about making greek yogurt at home but I am also an avid griller and general lover of lamb. I too, like many, have planted…
A little while back I came down with some health issues and as a result cut dairy from my diet. My family didn’t have to make such drastic diet changes, but I’ll admit that I wasn’t much inclined to make food I couldn’t eat. So…
